Beta-1,3/1,6
D-Glucan (Beta-Glucans) is a bioactive carbohydrate
derived from the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae,
commonly known as Bakers' yeast. Scientific studies
have shown that Beta-1,3/1,6 D-Glucan supports a healthy
immune system through its ability to maintain and modulate
several aspects of immune function, including macrophage
activity and immunoglobulin production. NOW® Xtra
Strength Beta-Glucans also contains ImmunEnhancer™,
a proprietary extract of Larch Arabinogalactan. Larch
Arabinogalactan is known to aid in the support of healthy
NK Cell activity in response to environmental stressors.
This exceptional combination of immune supporting ingredients
helps to fortify a healthy immune response seasonally
and throughout the year.

Important
Information
There
are more than 2000 papers describing the activities
of beta glucan. The vast majority of these papers detail
their immunological activities and it is therefore referred
to as an “immune potentiator.” An immune
potentiator will amplify the immune response in the
presence of pathogens and will modulate the immune response
when in the presence of immune response activators like
pollen, which cause an overreaction of the immune system.
In short, you do need protection from pathogens but
you do not need protection from flowers. Sources of
beta glucan include oats, barley, yeast and mushrooms.
Much interest has been placed on beta glucans derived
from oats or oat bran due to their fiber content and
the resultant cholesterol lowering properties.
Research
performed in the Department of Pathology at the University
of Louisville clearly showed the superior glucan, with
respect to phagocytotic and immunopotentiation, was
the yeast derived beta glucan. In layman’s terms
this means that this particular beta glucan provided
the activities I was most interested in for my mother.
I wanted an “amplification of her normal immune
response.” I was restoring her immune system with
probiotics and once it was restored I would amplify
its response with a high quality beta glucan specifically,
beta-1,3/1,6-glucan derived from yeast.
