Why
should you take Probiotics?
If
you are under stress, taking antibiotics, traveling
or simply want to promote your health, taking Probiotics
daily will maintain the health-promoting good bacteria
in your intestinal tract. This is important because
the intestines are the largest immune organ in the body
and promoting their health strengthens your body's overall
natural defenses. If the balance is disrupted, this
can leave a comprised immune response. Fortunately,
taking Probiotics supplements can help sustain the digestive
tracks balance by re-introducing beneficial bacteria.
To help restore normal dermal Probiotic balances natural
Probiotic based skin products can assist the process.
Do
you need Probiotics?
People
with flourishing intestinal colonies of probiotics are
better equipped to fight the growth of disease-causing
bacteria i.e. pathogenic organisms.
Probiotics
also produce substances called bacteriocin, which act
as natural antibiotics to kill undesirable microorganisms
e.g. fungus and yeast, viruses, parasites and bacteria.
COPD
and Probiotics
Currently,
science has established that approximately 70% of immune
system cells reside in the digestive tract. According
to Harvard Medical School,
“a
growing body of scientific evidence suggests that you
can treat and even prevent some illnesses with foods
and supplements containing certain kinds of live bacteria.
Northern Europeans consume a lot of these beneficial
microorganisms, called probiotics (from pro and biota,
meaning “for life”), because of their tradition
of eating foods fermented with bacteria, such as yogurt.
Probiotic-laced beverages are also big business in Japan.”
The
Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide states that,
“An
estimated 100 trillion microorganisms representing more
than 500 different species inhabit every normal, healthy
bowel. These microorganisms (or microflora) generally
don’t make us sick; most are helpful. Gut-dwelling
bacteria keep pathogens (harmful microorganisms) in
check, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and contribute
to immune function.”
Probiotics
are probably one of, if not the most important supplement
I gave my mother. Probiotics provide many useful and
beneficial functions. They are instrumental in the production
of red and white blood cells and are your body’s
first line of defense against invading pathogens. If
you have ever taken antibiotics, your probiotics are
probably nonexistent and your body may have a difficult
time fighting off pathogenic invasions whether they
be viral, bacterial, fungal or even oncological (cancer).
After
an online search I found a probiotic that was enteric
coated which would help it survive stomach acid. Once
the capsule enters the duodenum (the first 12 inches
of the small intestine) where the pH is more alkaline
or basic, the capsule or enteric coating dissolves and
the probiotics are released. It also contained the “probiotic”
formula which is the food supply for the live probiotics.
Finally, it contained probiotic strains that had been
fermented for a minimum of three years and included
Lactobacillus strains that would recolonize the small
intestine and Bifidobacterium strains that would recolonize
the large intestines.
Dr.
Mercola states rather emphatically that probiotics can
survive stomach acid without the enteric coating. He
recommends and sells a probiotic supplement that sounds
very good. The probiotic I gave my mother, and the one
I take myself, is Dr. Ohhira’s. There may be others
that are as good, even some that are better, however,
I had very good luck with Dr. Ohhira’s and still
take them to this day. Yogurt contains probiotics that
are usually from the Lactobacillus genus. The only problem
with yogurt these days is that the pasteurization process
eliminates most of the nutritional benefits. In addition,
most yogurt is full of sugar, making it more like pudding
than healthy food.
I
have suffered with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD) for three decades. I never took medications for
the problem and instead overcame it on a day-to-day
basis. Some days that was an impossible task. The new
menu and Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics have now diminished
my ADHD to a very manageable level. I did not think
that was possible until I began researching a myriad
of health issues and healthy alternative treatments
for common, yet debilitating, ailments. As a child I
had been given antibiotics by the doctors as their treatment
for allergies.
ADHD
is certainly not a serious, life threatening disease
like emphysema and COPD. I only mention it here because
I thought you might find it interesting hearing that
the new menu and the high-quality probiotics may help
with other ailments, illnesses and disorders. Dr. Fred
Pescatore, an M.D. in New York City swears by this new
menu and Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics. His 8-step allergy
and asthma cure includes them both.
With
respect to the treatment of illnesses, the Harvard Medical
School Family Health Guide states that,
“Probiotic
therapy may also help people with Crohn’s disease
and irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical trial results
are mixed, but several small studies suggest that certain
probiotics may help maintain remission of ulcerative
colitis and prevent relapse of Crohn’s disease
and the recurrence of pouchitis (a complication of surgery
to treat ulcerative colitis). Because these disorders
are so frustrating to treat, many people are giving
probiotics a try before all the evidence is in for the
particular strains they’re using. More research
is needed to find out which strains work best for what
conditions.
In
the United States, most probiotics are sold as dietary
supplements, which do not undergo the testing and approval
process that drugs do. Manufacturers are responsible
for making sure they’re safe before they’re
marketed and that any claims made on the label are true.
But there’s no guarantee that the types of bacteria
listed on a label are effective for the condition you’re
taking them for. Health benefits are strain-specific,
and not all strains are necessarily useful, so you may
want to consult a practitioner familiar with probiotics
to discuss your options. As always, let your primary
care provider know what you’re doing.”
I
get tired of hearing that drugs are carefully scrutinized
and go through a rigorous testing and approval process.
While this may be true, when is the last time you heard
of a supplement killing someone? Now think about how
many class action lawsuits against drug manufacturers
you hear about that have either injured or killed patients?
Every single one of the drugs that have killed people
have undergone this rigorous testing and approval process.
I think their testing and approval process must be flawed
or the approved drugs would not injure or kill anyone!
I
did not ask my mother’s doctors before I gave
her probiotics. I knew she had been given multiple doses
of antibiotics in the not too distant past so I knew
her probiotics were nonexistent and therefore, her immune
system was compromised according to Dr. Pescatore and
others. I also knew that extensive clinical trials were
not in the works due to the expense. Only drug companies
can afford these expensive clinical trials and they
use this fact when raising questions about the effectiveness
of various supplements. I always remember that all drugs
have side-effects and almost all supplements do not.
Even
though the jury is still out regarding the exact benefits
of probiotics, some of the health claims made by probiotic
manufacturers, distributors and marketers include the
following:
•
Hydrocarbons are broken down by probiotic bacteria which
mean the food is being split into its most basic elements.
This allows almost total absorption through the digestive
system. In this way probiotics dramatically increase
overall nutrition and enhance rapid cellular growth
and development.
• The intestinal tract is cleaned by probiotics.
They go under the layer of crud on the intestinal walls,
attach themselves and dislodge the accumulated decay.
This waste is then flushed out naturally.
• Probiotics also produce many important enzymes
and increase the availability of vitamins and nutrients,
especially Vitamin B, Vitamin K, lactase, fatty acids
and calcium.
• Another one of the benefits of probiotics is
that these bacteria strengthen the immune system. Because
of this support to the immune system, they have been
used in alleviating allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome
and systemic candida.
• Constipation is quickly relieved by probiotics
and the bowel movements become normalized, which means
diarrhea is also reduced.
• These good bacteria produce specific proteins
that act as antigens. The reservoirs of nonspecific
antigens are then available for the immune system in
battling all kinds of different disease conditions.
• Probiotic bacteria work in symbiosis with tissue
and organ cells in metabolizing proteins and helping
eliminate toxic wastes from the body.
• Probiotics help in killing viruses and parasites
thus providing benefits of increased health.
• People taking probiotics have experienced lowered
cholesterol.
• Allergies and skin problems are aided by taking
probiotic bacteria.
• Yeast and fungal infections are prevented, and
sometimes eliminated by supplementing probiotics.
• They also stimulate the body's own production
of alpha-interferon, a key regulator of our immune response.
• Since probiotics clean the colon, bad breath
and body odor are greatly reduced. This is because the
lungs and skin will be utilized by the body in helping
eliminate toxins when the intestinal tract is clogged
and functioning poorly.
• Probiotic bacteria produce Lactoferrin as a
by-product of their metabolism. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding
protein essential in retrieving iron from foods we eat.
Increased Lactoferrin helps relieve iron-assimilation
deficiencies.
"There
was a noticeable improvement in my mother’s overall
health and in my own health with the addition of Dr.
Ohhira’s probiotics into our daily supplement
regimen. We took one in the morning and one in the evening
for four months. We stopped taking them for two months
and then took them again for an additional four months.
Since I knew they played such an important role in the
functioning and overall integrity of the immune system
I made sure my mother took them four out of every six
months."
